Samye

The Samye or Samye Monastery the first Buddhist Monastery built in Tibet.

History

Legend said that an Indian monk, Jingming came to Tibet to spread Buddhism. On seeing that Samye was considered to be a sacred site, he decided to built a monastery. However, the monastery was unable to be completed as the imcomplete building it would collaspe after building to a certain extent. Terrified, the construction workers believed that there was a demon in a nearby river was making trouble. Padmasambhava first came to Tibet with the intivation of the Tibetan king Trisong Detsen, who wanted to learn about Buddhism. It was said that the Bn demons were crushed at Samye, and the monastery was successfully built on the same spot.
