. It is one of several parties that emerged when the
Janata Dal
was fragmented. SP is led by
Mulayam Singh Yadav
. SP is primarily based in
Uttar Pradesh
, were is currently holds the state government. SP is mainly based amongst the
Yadav
caste, but also has large support from other groups such as
Muslims
. In the 13th
Lok Sabha

), it was the 5th largest party with 27 members (3 of whom were expelled later). In
2004
Lok Sabha elections
, SP decided not to align with neither
BJP
nor
Congress
. Instead it ran in alliance with the
Rashtriya Lok Dal
