Saluda County is a county located in the state of South Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 19,181. Its county seat is Saluda6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,196 km² (462 mi²). 1,172 km² (452 mi²) of it is land and 24 km² (9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.01% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 19,181 people, 7,127 households, and 5,295 families residing in the county. The population density is 16/km² (42/mi²). There are 8,543 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (19/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 65.80% White, 29.99% Black or African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.04% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 3.29% from other races, and 0.64% from two or more races. 7.30% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 7,127 households out of which 31.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.20% are married couples living together, 14.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.70% are non-families. 22.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.07. In the county, the population is spread out with 24.90% under the age of 18, 9.20% from 18 to 24, 27.60% from 25 to 44, 23.80% from 45 to 64, and 14.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 98.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.30 males. The median income for a household in the county is $35,774, and the median income for a family is $41,603. Males have a median income of $29,221 versus $21,395 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,328. 15.60% of the population and 12.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.40% of those under the age of 18 and 16.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
