Sal is an island in the archipelago of Cape Verde and municipality of the same name. The island is around 30km long by 12 km wide. It belongs to the northern group of islands, called Barlavento and is one of the three sandy, plane islands of the archipelago (Sal, Boavista and Maio which are the eastern islands of the archipelago, with beautiful white sandy beaches and hardly no elevation. It's hihest elevation is Monte Grande, with 406m. Sal's main town, Vila dos Espargos, is home to one of the nation's international airport and has around 8,000 inhabitants. Its population grew around salt collection and later shifted to fishing, but is now based on tourism in the beach resort of Santa Maria. There are six habitational centers:
  • Pedra de Lume, in the eastern coast, was the most ancient and home of the first salt workers. Today it is only a small village with very few habitants.
  • Palmeira is a fishing village, built around a port situated in the opposite coast of the island. It is also a small village but it is presently growing
  • Espargos is the main urban center and is situated between Pedra de Lume and Palmeira. it was formed around the international airport.
  • Terra Boa is the only place in the island where you can find agriculture in a larger scale, as the island, like the three mentioned before is very dry, mainly because they have no montains to help rain falling. it is situated north to espargos.
  • Murdeira is a touristical resort, which has known recently a great growing, with many people buying houses there.
  • Finnaly, there's Santa Maria, which was a former salt working village but is now the touristical center of the island and one of the most importan (if not the most important) touristical point in the country.
