Saint Bathans, New Zealand

The former gold and coal mining town of St.Bathans lies deep in the hear of the Maniototo in New Zealand's Otago region. Though the minerals are long gone, the town lives on as a tranquil holiday retreat, and the preservation of many of its historic buildings amke the town one of the region's more pictureque tourist venues. Located near the banks of the Dunstan River, beneath the rugged hills of the St. Bathans and Dunstan mountains, the town is located 30 kilometres northwest of Ranfurly and 50 kilometres northeast of Alexandra. Prominent features of the town include the historic Vulcan Hotel, which is a restored public house reputed to be haunted, and the Blue Lake, a small lake beside the Dunstan River formed during gold sluicing, the waters of which give it a distinctive turquoise colour. The area still attracts many visitors intent on Gold prospecting
