Ss396Prior to 1969 (1968 Model Year for Chevrolet), the SS396 was its own car model. The car was based off the A-Body GM platform. The Chevrolets based on this platform in 1968 included in order from Highest to Base model as follows: SS396, El-Camino, Chevelle, Concours, 300 and 300 Deluxe, Malibu Prior to 1969, the SS396 models are easy to identify by their VIN #. All SS396 cars vins are identified by "138" for the first 3 numbers of the VIN. In 1969 Chevrolet decided to make the SS396 an upgrade option for the Chevelle. It is important for collectors of these cars contact their local car clubs and do research. Over the years a lot of Chevelles were altered to look like SS396 cars. (These are known as clones). An SS396 is worth more so an unsuspecting buying can end up paying a premium price for a "clonned car".
