S5w ReactorThe Westinghouse Electric Corporation's S5W nuclear reactor was the standard reactor for ships of the United States Navy from its first use in 1959 in the USS Skipjack to the introduction of the Los Angeles class submarines in the mid-1970s One such plant was also used in Britain's first nuclear-powered submarine HMS Dreadnought (S101). It should be noted that for security reasons, accesses to the reactor spaces on any submarines or surface vessels is restricted to authorized personnel only. Two S5W reactor plants remain in service, the MTS 626 (ex-USS Daniel Webster) and the MTS 635 (ex-USS Sam Rayburn). These plants are used to train naval nuclear operators.
