Ruston, Washington

Ruston is a town located in Pierce County, Washington. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 738.

History

Ruston was officially incorporated on November 10, 1906. It is surrounded on one side by Commencement Bay and all other sides the city of Tacoma. It was established by industralist James Rust as a company town for his employees. Although it is nearly indistinguishable from the rest of Tacoma, the predominately residential middle-class area still retains its status as a separate city.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²). 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 738 people, 330 households, and 185 families residing in the town. The population density is 1,095.9/km² (2,879.9/mi²). There are 355 housing units at an average density of 527.2/km² (1,385.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 87.26% White, 2.57% African American, 2.98% Native American, 2.30% Asian, 0.14% Pacific Islander, 1.08% from other races, and 3.66% from two or more races. 3.79% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 330 households out of which 22.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.8% are married couples living together, 9.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 43.9% are non-families. 34.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.24 and the average family size is 2.87. In the town the population is spread out with 20.1% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 33.5% from 25 to 44, 27.1% from 45 to 64, and 10.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 106.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 108.5 males. The median income for a household in the town is $48,393, and the median income for a family is $54,167. Males have a median income of $36,932 versus $36,042 for females. The per capita income for the town is $22,565. 13.1% of the population and 7.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.8% of those under the age of 18 and 5.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
