Roger Lapham
Roger Dearborn Lapham

) was a shipowner and businessman who was elected
Republican
mayor of
San Francisco
from
1944
to
1948
. He was born in
New York City
. An attempt to
recall
him from office in
1946
failed. In
1947
he attempted to scrap the city's
cable car system
, claiming it was too expensive. This idea was abandoned in the face of protests and the city retains the
cable cars
to this day. He was the grandfather of
Harper's Magazine
