Robot Master

Robot Master is also a character in the Transformers comics.
In the Mega Man original series, a Robot Master is a special kind of robot or android that possesses a very advanced level of artificial intelligence. The Robot Master AI system is credited to Dr. Thomas Light. Most Robot Masters possess a unique identification code, consisting of a two-letter "series code" followed by one of N, No, or #, then a three-digit "serial number".

List of Robot Masters

DRN series

DRN is the series code for Right Labs, specifically, "Dr. Right Numbers". Despite the name change from Dr. Right to Dr. Light in the English-version games, the code has remained the same.
  • DRN-000 Blues - The prototype Robot Master. Designed for military applications. Went AWOL during testing; current whereabouts unknown. See Proto Man
  • DRN-001 Rock - One of two test-type Robot Masters. Originally designed as a multi-purpose tool-user, but was remodeled as a fighting robot based on the designs for Proto Man. See Mega Man
  • DRN-002 Roll - Second of two test-type Robot Masters. Designed as a housekeeper. See Roll
  • DRN-003 Cutman - Designed for land reclamation work; in particular, deforestation.
  • DRN-004 Gutsman - Also designed for land reclamation work, but also used in construction of public works.
  • DRN-005 Iceman - Originally designed for the exploration and mapping of Antarctica, but also supervises transportation of supplies to various research teams on the continent.
  • DRN-006 Bombman - Also designed for land reclamation work. He and Gutsman were originally intended to work as a pair.
  • DRN-007 Fireman - Designed for waste management work; in particular, incineration. Built to withstand temperatures in excess of 8000 C.
  • DRN-008 Elecman - Designed to oversee and control atomic energy power plants. At the time of his creation, Elecman was often hailed as Dr. Light's greatest creation and boasts superhuman calculation speed and razor-sharp judgement, as well as a physical agility that would not be matched for some time.

DWN series

DWN is the series code for Robot Masters that have been modified by Dr. Wily. Once upon a time, Capcom ran an annual Robot Master design contest. As well, Nintendo Power magazine ran a similar contest, but only for Mega Man VI. The DWN series is the result of these contests. The original designer's name is listed in parenthesis at the end of each entry. Contrary to popular belief, most DWN robots were not built from scratch by Dr. Wily.

009-016 (Mega Man II)

  • DWN-009 Metalman - Metalman was designed by Wily as a modification of the DRN-003 Cutman design. Unfortunately, due to an error in design, Metalman developed a weakness to Mega Man's Mega Buster. His weapon, the Metal Blade, is a targetted projectile made of Right Ceramic Titanium that easily slices through most materials. (Masanori Satou)
  • DWN-010 Airman - Airman was designed by Wily. He resulted from Wily's experiments in creating Robot Masters that did not use the same internal architecture as the general humanoid model, commonplace since DRN-000. Airman's weapon is Air Shooter. (Yuji Kanazawa)
  • DWN-011 Bubbleman - Wily designed Bubbleman for underwater combat, but due to an error in design, Bubbleman's internal buoyancy system made it impossible for him to swim properly, hampering his underwater mobility. Bubbleman's weapon is Bubble Lead; the "Lead" is as in leadership, not as in lead, the element. (Takashi Tanaka)
  • DWN-012 Quickman - Quickman was designed by Wily as a modification of the DRN-008 Elecman design. Wily vastly improved the already lightning-fast reflexes and general mobility of the design, making Quickman (in 20XX at least) the fastest Robot Master in the world. Like Bass, Quickman has disobeyed Wily in certain circumstances and sided with Mega Man. He is able to launch Quick Boomerangs that are even faster than he is. (Hirofumi Mizoguchi)
  • DWN-013 Crashman - Crashman was designed by Wily to withstand strong explosions. For this purpose, he has superhuman agility and a special armor coating. He takes advantage of this resistance by use of heavy-duty Crash Bombers. These bombs are able to burrow into any surface and detonate on a short timer. (Akira Yoshida)
  • DWN-014 Flashman - In an experiment attempting to develop control over time, Wily built Flashman, who, equipped with the Time Stopper, can freeze time momentarily. The process uses far too much power to be useful, however, and is easily countered - but Flashman likes to take advantage of his ability to play practical jokes on unsuspecting victims. (Tomoo Yamaguchi)
  • DWN-015 Heatman - Wily, utilising the schematics of DRN-007 Fireman, created Heatman as a high-temperature combat robot. Heatman's armored container is impervious to temperatures in excess of 12000 C, but to be fully effective must remain sealed. This gives his body a rather amusing Zippo lighter shape. Heatman's weapon, Atomic Fire, creates a slowly-growing flame that surrounds Heatman's armored container. (Toshiyuki Kataoka)
  • DWN-016 Woodman - Wily made Woodman entirely of Hinoki Cypress. Woodman also has a thin protective coating, but cannot withstand high temperatures. He has the ability to call together a razor-sharp Leaf Shield that can also be used as a projectile. (Masakatsu Ichikawa)

017-024 (Mega Man III)

  • DWN-017 Needleman - Can launch heavy needles (Nobuhiko Akatsuka)
  • DWN-018 Magnetman - A magnet on his head can attract his metal enemies to their doom (Nagashi Kii)
  • DWN-019 Geminiman - Can duplicate himself and fire powerful bouncing laser blasts (Yoshihito Hattori)
  • DWN-020 Hardman - Has a very solid ceramic metal hide, uses his own weight to attack (Kazuhiko Oguro)
  • DWN-021 Topman - Like a human top, he can spin and throw spinning tops (Yasushi Konjiki)
  • DWN-022 Snakeman - Dressed like a snake, he launches mechanical search snakes (Yuhjiro Ishitani)
  • DWN-023 Sparkman - Electric robot, generates spark currents (Mikihiro Suzuki)
  • DWN-024 Shadowman - Ninja robot, he is very fast, can make the room dark, and throw shurikens (Takumine Yoshida)

025-032 (Mega Man IV)

Each of the Robot Masters numbered 025-032 were designed by Dr. Cossack; they are therefore more correctly labelled with the DCN series code. Dr. Wily did modify them, however, and some games (such as Rockman & Forte) classify them as DWN.
  • DCN-025 Brightman - Created for emergency illumination and rescue work. (Yoshitaka Enomoto)
  • DCN-026 Toadman - Created for agricultural use; specifically, terraforming. (Atsushi Ootsuka)
  • DCN-027 Drillman - Created for underground tunnel construction work. (Masayuki Hoshi)
  • DCN-028 Pharaohman - Created for archaeological excavation. The pharaoh motif was indended to ward off curses. (Takayuki Ebara)
  • DCN-029 Ringman - Created expressly for anti-Rockman combat as a modification of an earlier police-robot design. (Hiromi Uchida)
  • DCN-030 Dustman - Created for city beautification projects. (Yuusuke Murata)
  • DCN-031 Diveman - Created for deep sea exploration. (Suguru Nakayama)
  • DCN-032 Skullman - Created for wartime combat purposes. Skullman balances attack and defensive strengths and is a skilled mercenary. His skull motif is used as a kind of psychological warfare tactic against human opponents. (Toshiyuki Miyachi)

033-040 (Mega Man V)

  • DWN-033 Gravityman (Yukino Mori)
  • DWN-034 Waveman (Hideyuki Monno)
  • DWN-035 Stoneman (Kenta Oonishi)
  • DWN-036 Gyroman (Katsunari Oguri)
  • DWN-037 Starman (Tatsumi Saegusa)
  • DWN-038 Chargeman (Toshiaki Sugiura)
  • DWN-039 Napalmman (Shinichirou Seki)
  • DWN-040 Crystalman (Yuusuke Murata)

041-048 (Mega Man VI)

The plot of Mega Man VI is that a robot design contest takes place, sponsored by the mysterious Mr. X, (later revealed to be Dr. Wily in disguise.) Mr. X steals the eight finalists and reprograms them. So technically, the DWN moniker is inaccurate, as they were built by a variety of people.
  • DWN-041 Blizzardman (Hirofumi Ogawa)
  • DWN-042 Centaurman (Kazuki Kidoguchi)
  • DWN-043 Flameman (Noritsugu Kurokawa)
  • DWN-044 Knightman (Daniel Vallie)
  • DWN-045 Plantman (Nobuhiro Hoshino)
  • DWN-046 Tomahawkman (Yoshinobu Suda)
  • DWN-047 Windman (Michael Leader)
  • DWN-048 Yamatoman (Rai Ichikawa)

049-056 (Mega Man VII)

  • DWN-049 Freezeman (Shigeaki Sakamoto)
  • DWN-050 Junkman (Jun Akiba)
  • DWN-051 Burstman (Keishi Tsuchiya)
  • DWN-052 Cloudman (Isao Nakagiri)
  • DWN-053 Springman (Akira Ito)
  • DWN-054 Slashman (Yoichi Amano)
  • DWN-055 Shademan (Tetsuya Watada)
  • DWN-056 Turboman (Takashi Kino)

057-064 (Mega Man 8)

  • DWN-057 Tenguman - An experimental weather-control robot modeled after the tengu. He tends to look down on people, thinking that he is superior. His attacks are Tornado Hold, which causes a small tornado and sometimes encases enemies in the vortex, and Tengu Blade, a blade that can either be held forward while sliding or dashing or be thrown at enemies.
  • DWN-058 Astroman - Built from abandoned planetarium parts, Wily intended Astroman to hypontize observers in the Planetarium. By manipulating the dimensional space around him, Astroman can create a virtual-reality subspace, an ability which makes him incredibly talented at hide-and-seek. Astroman was not built for battle, as the indirect nature of his attacks, Astro Crush and Copy Vision, can attest.
  • DWN-059 Swordman - Wily once stole an ancient sword from a museum. The sword was so large, however, that he could find no use for it, so he made Swordman to use it as a weapon. However, the sword was still too heavy for Swordman to lift. For this reson, Swordman's upper body and lower body were split, allowing them to move independently, and a gyroscopic stabalizer was installed in the upper half. His personalty is that of a honorable knight. His attack channels energy through the sword to cause a burst of flame, and is therefore called Flame Sword.
  • DWN-060 Clownman - Wily stole Clownman from the set of a cancelled sci-fi show and remodeled him using props. His arms are able to extend several times then his own body, a fact that amuses Wily to no end. Because of the attention he gets from them, Clownman is very proud of his long arms. His attacks are electricity-based: Thunder Claw grabs opponents with an electrified arm, and Thunder Carnival electrifies his whole body.
  • DWN-061 Searchman - Using parts from an out-of-service secruity robot, Wily added an extra head to Searchman. However, instead of adding to the abilities of this surveillance robot, the heads tend to watch each other rather than look for intruders. Using guerrilla tactics, they try to ambush opponents with a barrage of missles called Homing Sniper.
  • DWN-062 Frostman - During Clownman's remodeling, Wily went a little overboard ordering parts; Frostman was built to use the extras. Wily had enough spare parts that he installed an ice machine inside Frostman, allowing him to produce icicle spikes on the ground in an attack called Ice Wave. Although he shows limited intelligence, he seems able to do ice sculpture.
  • DWN-063 Grenademan - Due to Grenademan's faulty programming, he cannot discriminate between targets and allies, and tends to attack anyone and anything, including himself - his personality is that of a masochist. His attack is called Flash Bomb, and is a stunning concussion grenade.
  • DWN-064 Aquaman - Aquaman is the result of Wily's first attempt to build Frostman's ice machine. Instead of scrapping him, Wily gave him a water tank and sent him to a water treatment facility to train. His attacks are Water Cannon and Water Ballon.

  • KGN-001 Dynamoman - He was originally a tour guide for children at a power plant. King modified him with an internal power generator. The power from this generator is too much for his body to stand, causing unstable feedback to anyone who goes near him. Because of this he is somewhat antisocial, yet he yearns to be as he was in the old days. His attack is Lighting Bolt.
  • KGN-002 Coldman - Designed by Dr. Light to montior the freezers for dinosaur DNA. King modified him to be a guardian. The center of his body is always at zero degrees, causing him to have slow movement. His attack, Ice Wall, allows him to make a brick of ice and push it as a projectile; he can also use it as a mode of transportation.
  • KGN-003 Groundman - Designed to excavate ruins. He joined King's army in order to collect treasures. His one of the strongest of King's guardians, but he rarely talks or shows emotions. He also likes to horde treasures for himself without telling King. His attack is Spread Drill.
  • KGN-004 Pirateman - Built to raid on cargo ships in the open sea. He is said to be behind several raids and has a massive stash of goods underwater. His attack is Remote Mine, an electromagnetic mine that attaches to the enemy and then explodes.
  • KGN-005 Burnerman - Created to destroy nature. King lied to him, saying "You must burn a forest every day or your self-destruct bomb will explode." His attack is Wave Burner.
  • KGN-006 Magicman - A former member of the King Army Circus Group, he enlisted as a guardian thinking it would make him cool. He likes to research magic and illusions as well as fortune telling, but just to impress his peers. His attack, Magic Card, is a razor sharp playing card that shoots in straight path.
