Scottish
lighthouse
engineer
and
stepson
of
Thomas Smith
, also a lighthouse engineer. In
1786
Stevenson was apprenticed to a
gunsmith
and then to Thomas Smith. Stevenson's mother Jane married Smith in
1792
. Stevenson became a partner in Smith's business in
1800
. Stevenson had three sons who all became engineers:

Alan
, and
Thomas
.
