Ripley, Tennessee

Ripley is a city located in Lauderdale County, Tennessee. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 7,844. It is the county seat of Lauderdale County.

Geography

Ripley is located at 35°44'35" North, 89°32'2" West (35.743115, -89.533872). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 33.3 km² (12.9 mi²). 33.2 km² (12.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.31% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 7,844 people, 3,142 households, and 2,054 families residing in the city. The population density is 236.4/km² (612.3/mi²). There are 3,397 housing units at an average density of 102.4/km² (265.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 51.56% White, 46.81% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.38% from other races, and 0.83% from two or more races. 1.07% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,142 households out of which 32.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.1% are married couples living together, 23.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.6% are non-families. 31.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 3.06. In the city the population is spread out with 27.6% under the age of 18, 11.0% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 84.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 78.3 males. The median income for a household in the city is $23,662, and the median income for a family is $34,183. Males have a median income of $31,321 versus $20,661 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,710. 27.2% of the population and 22.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 38.1% of those under the age of 18 and 27.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
