Richmond, Kentucky

Richmond is a city located in Madison County, Kentucky, United States named after Richmond, Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 27,152. It is the county seat of Madison County and home to Eastern Kentucky University.

Geography

Richmond is located at 37°44'41" North, 84°17'37" West (37.744720, -84.293562). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 49.9 km² (19.2 mi²). 49.5 km² (19.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.73% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 27,152 people, 10,795 households, and 5,548 families residing in the city. The population density is 548.3/km² (1,420.4/mi²). There are 11,857 housing units at an average density of 239.4/km² (620.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 88.30% White, 8.27% African American, 0.29% Native American, 1.09% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.43% from other races, and 1.58% from two or more races. 1.21% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 10,795 households out of which 24.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.2% are married couples living together, 12.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 48.6% are non-families. 34.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.14 and the average family size is 2.78. The age distribution, influenced strongly by the presence of Eastern Kentucky University, is: 17.5% under the age of 18, 31.7% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 13.8% from 45 to 64, and 9.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 25 years. For every 100 females there are 90.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.8 males. The median income for a household in the city is $25,533, and the median income for a family is $36,222. Males have a median income of $30,817 versus $22,053 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,815. 25.0% of the population and 16.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 26.2% of those under the age of 18 and 19.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line. However, traditional poverty measures can be misleading when applied to communities with substantial student populations, such as Richmond.
