Richland Center, Wisconsin

Richland Center is a city located in Richland County, Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,114. The town was the birthplace of Frank Lloyd Wright.

Geography

  Center is located at 43°20'16" North, 90°23'5" West (43.337836, -90.384605). 
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.6 km² (4.5 mi²). 11.4 km² (4.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.79% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 5,114 people, 2,296 households, and 1,285 families residing in the city. The population density is 449.8/km² (1,164.6/mi²). There are 2,470 housing units at an average density of 217.2/km² (562.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.22% White, 0.16% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.35% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. 0.92% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,296 households out of which 25.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.6% are married couples living together, 11.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 44.0% are non-families. 38.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 21.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.15 and the average family size is 2.83. In the city the population is spread out with 21.6% under the age of 18, 10.9% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 23.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 84.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 78.8 males. The median income for a household in the city is $27,129, and the median income for a family is $38,625. Males have a median income of $28,207 versus $19,908 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,520. 12.6% of the population and 9.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.4% of those under the age of 18 and 12.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Education

The city is a home to the University of Wisconsin-Richland campus, which is a freshman-sophomore campus in the University of Wisconsin System.
