Richard Booth

Richard Booth (full name Richard George William Pitt Booth), born September 12, 1938, British bookseller and eccentric who proclaimed himself ruler of the Independent Kingdom of Hay-on-Wye on April 1, 1977 (he named his horse Prime Minister). This proclamation earned him and the town world-wide publicity, and fueled the used book business that had already taken hold in the town, with the construction of dozens of bookshops.
