History

RI 37 was part of the first plan for a proposed Interstate 895 that would've served as an eastern beltway around Providence. RI 37 was also studied as a possible route for a proposed Interstate 84 that would've connected Providence with Hartford, Connecticut.

Notes

RI 37's main purpose today is to provide access to T.F. Green Airport for through traffic from Massachusetts. Signs in Massachusetts direct traffic to the Airport to use Interstate 295 instead of Interstate 95 in order to avoid unnecessary traffic through downtown Providence.
