Reu

REU is the abbreviation for RAM Expansion Unit, used by the Commodore 64 and Commodore 128 personal computers. It came in three strengths:
  • 1700: +128k
  • 1764: +256k
  • 1750: +512k
These packs could not be directly accessed by the processor due to limitations in the hardware, but could perform direct memory access (DMA). They were often used as high-speed 'ramdisks' to store secondary files by programs such as GEOS, leaving the main program in memory. In addition, there was a 'GEORAM' pack of 512k that was used almost exclusively with GEOS that could not perform DMA; it acted as an disk drive that was 'invisible' to programs other than GEOS (although a few programs would not function correctly with it in place). It came bundled with GEOS 2.0, could be upgraded to 2MB, and could be battery-backed.
