Regions Of Portugal

There are five regions (regies, singular - regio) in mainland Portugal. There are 28 subregions (subregies, singular - subregio). Each region is listed (north to south) with its subregions (alphabetically) indented below. These regions are the Portuguese NUTS II subdivisions, based not at the district level, but at the municipal one, leading to large inconsistencies between district and region limits. There are two Autonomous Regions (regies autnomas, singular regio autnoma) in the Atlantic Ocean: Each of the two authonomous regions is its own NUTS II region. Municipalities are at NUTS IV level. In between there are stastistical regions with no administrative value of their own.
