Raf FylingdalesRAF Fylingdales is a Royal Air Force radar station in North Yorkshire. Fylingdales opened in 1962 as a Ballistic Missile Early Warning Station. Its primary mission was, and is, the detection of ballistic missile launches against the United Kingdom and the United States, in which capacity it acts in conjunction with other sites in Greenland and Alaska. Its secondary mission is to detect, identify and track man-made objects in earth orbit, contributing to the US Space Surveillance Network. It also monitors satellites that could be used for observation of the United Kingdom by potentially hostile powers. Fylingdales was once famous for the 'golf ball' radomes, easily visible from the nearby motorway. These have now been replaced by phased array radars. External links Fylingdales Fylingdales
