Queensland University Of TechnologyQueensland University of Technology (or QUT) is a university, with its central campus located in the heart of Brisbane, Australia. In addition to being a large teaching university, QUT also has many research programs. As of 2003, it had 39 978 students enrolled. History QUT's history can be traced back to Brisbane's Central Technical College, established in 1908 at Gardens Point, which in 1965 became part of the Queensland Institute of Technology. QUT received its current name in 1989. QUT was the first university in Australia to form a Faculty of Information Technology. In 2001, QUT was the first university in the world to introduce a Creative Industries Faculty. Competition QUT's largest competitor in Queensland is the University of Queensland (UQ). UQ is the largest university in Queensland (by total enrolments), where QUT is the second-largest. Proponents of UQ, a "sandstone university", often argue that it carries more prestige than QUT. Such comparisons are not necessarily valid, however, because the offerings of the two institutes vary greatly. For example, UQ offers only a small number of theoretical subjects in the fields of visual and fine arts, compared with QUT's large number of programs in those fields, which include practical study. Conversely, QUT offers less in the scientific disciplines. It should also be noted on this point that QUT is not a member of the Group of Eight - instead, it belongs to the Australian Technology Network. UQ is generally known for offering courses of a more theoretical nature than QUT: supporters of QUT maintain that its courses equip graduates with more practical job skills. Publicity QUT's current publicity campaign features the slogan "A university for the real world". Its TV spots feature past students and their current employment. Campuses QUT has three main campuses, located at - Gardens Point — located in the central business district, between the botanic gardens and the Brisbane River
- Kelvin Grove - including the new Creative Industries Precinct, which boasts two university performance spaces (The Loft and The Block) as well as fashion, film and visual arts studios. The Precinct is also home to the La Boite Theatre Company and other businesses.
