Putnam Valley, New York

Putnam Valley is a town located in Putnam County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 10,686. The Town of Putnam Valley is in the southwest part of the county. The town calls itself the "Town of lakes."

History

The Town of Putnam Valley, incorporated in 1839 as the Town of Quincy, when it was separated from Philipstown, took the name Putnam Valley in 1840.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 111.4 km² (43.0 mi²). 107.2 km² (41.4 mi²) of it is land and 4.1 km² (1.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.72% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 10,686 people, 3,676 households, and 2,874 families residing in the town. The population density is 99.7/km² (258.2/mi²). There are 4,253 housing units at an average density of 39.7/km² (102.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 94.54% White, 1.60% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.85% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.28% from other races, and 1.53% from two or more races. 6.28% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,676 households out of which 39.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.1% are married couples living together, 8.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.8% are non-families. 17.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.89 and the average family size is 3.28. In the town the population is spread out with 26.7% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 31.5% from 25 to 44, 27.1% from 45 to 64, and 8.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 99.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.2 males. The median income for a household in the town is $72,938, and the median income for a family is $82,576. Males have a median income of $56,976 versus $36,875 for females. The per capita income for the town is $31,215. 4.8% of the population and 2.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.4% of those under the age of 18 and 1.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
