Pudsey
Pudsey
is a town in the
county
of
West Yorkshire
,
England
, between
Bradford
and
Leeds
. Formerly within the
wapentake
of
Morley
and
Calverley Parish
, Pudsey became a
Municipal borough
in
1889
. It merged with
Farsley
and
Calverley
in
1937
, and in
1974
became part of the
Leeds
Metropolitan District. The town is famous for its
wool
manufacture in the 18th and 19th centuries and for
cricket
. Cricketers
Sir Len Hutton
,
Herbert Sutcliffe
and
Ray Illingworth
all learnt to play in Pudsey. The town has given its name to "Pudsey Bear", the mascot of the
BBC
's annual fundraising marathon
