Province Of North Carolina

The Province of North Carolina was originally part of the Province of Carolina, which was charted by eight Lords Proprietors. First settlement of the North Carolina Colony was in 1653, Charles II of England granted the Carolina charter in 1663 for lands south of Virginia Colony and north of Spanish Florida. The Carolinas were divided into North and South in 1729, when seven of the eight Lords Proprietors sold out (rendering Carolina a crown colony). See also: List of North Carolina Governors
