Proconsul (Genus)
An early genus of apes from 27 to 17 million years ago during the Miocene epoch. First in Kenya, and restricted to Africa. There are 5 species ranging in size from 22-84 lbs. They inhabited rainforests. They had a mixture of monkey and ape characteristics: Monkey: thin tooth enamel, light build, narrow chest, short forelimbs, aboreal quadruped Ape: no tail, elbow similar to modern apes, slightly larger brain relative to body size.
