Priscilla Chan

Priscilla Chan Wai-han (陳慧嫻 born July 28, 1965) is a female singer in Hong Kong. Her father is a retired Hong Kong Immigration senior officer. She started her life as a professional singer when she was 16 in 1983. She recorded her first album "The feeling of stories" (故事的感覺) in 1984. It was the album 娴情 and the song "Silly Girl" (傻女, a Cantonese rework version of the Spanish song "La Loca")which first confirmed her as a strong contender in the golden age of Cantopop. Her other songs such as the frenzy 'Dancing Boy' and '不住怨妇街' (Will Not Live Feeling Resentful Woman), as well as the popular '飘雪' (Snowing) are among of her more famous hits. However, it was her everlasting hit "Thousands of Songs" (千千阙歌) that placed her up there among the likes of Leslie Cheung, Anita Mui and Andy Lau. She chose to retire in 1989 in order to pursue her masters degree in psychology at the Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York but has returned to the music industry by 1997. However, her fame has almost all but eluded her as is the current crop of singers who established themselves 15 years ago, only to find life difficult to contend with the new generation of Cantopop stars. Her personal life was also closely scrutinised by the Hong Kong press who even went to great lengths to search the garbage that her family (parents and younger sister) takes out every day as she was still unmarried even though she is attached to a boyfriend (Michael Wong). She recently held a concert in Hong Kong in 2003 and was also a guest at Samuel Hui's concert marking his return to the Cantopop music industry in 2004. She was often reported to be on the verge of calling time on her career in the face of such drawbacks but she has refuted all these claims although her work of late has not been particularly active, preferring to appear on TVB television programmes and singing in benefit concerts.
