is a professional and graduate school operated by the
Presbyterian Church USA
in
Princeton, New Jersey
. It was established in
1812
, when higher-level professional education was beginning to be separated from the general education taught at many universities in the
United States
. Princeton Theological Seminary was begun with the support of the directors of nearby
Princeton University
as a place to prepare people for the ministry. The seminary was made famous during the
19th
and early
20th centuries
for its defense of
Calvinistic
Presbyterianism
. The college was later the center of a
modernist
/
fundamentalist
battle which ultimately led to the formation of the
Orthodox Presbyterian Church
and
Westminster Theological Seminary
under the leadership of
J. Gresham Machen
