Princeton is a town located in Washington County, Maine. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 892.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 109.5 km² (42.3 mi²). 95.9 km² (37.0 mi²) of it is land and 13.6 km² (5.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 12.40% water.

Demographics

As of the census ² of 2000, there are 892 people, 370 households, and 253 families residing in the town. The population density is 9.3/km² (24.1/mi²). There are 488 housing units at an average density of 5.1/km² (13.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 95.85% White, 0.11% African American, 3.25% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.67% from two or more races. 0.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 370 households out of which 36.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% are married couples living together, 8.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.4% are non-families. 27.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 2.87. In the town the population is spread out with 27.2% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.1 males. The median income for a household in the town is $28,603, and the median income for a family is $39,464. Males have a median income of $40,139 versus $24,688 for females. The per capita income for the town is $14,449. 18.0% of the population and 12.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.9% of those under the age of 18 and 27.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
