Princes Freeway

Princes Freeway M1 links Melbourne to Geelong on the west and Traralgon on the east. It continues beyond these extremities as Princes Highway to Adelaide on the west and Sydney on the east. The western section (also known as Princes Freeway west) starts from Altona and the eastern section (also known as Princes Freeway east) starts from Berwick. The sections are connected together by West Gate Freeway, CityLink and Monash Freeway. Princes Freeway subsumes and bypasses the older Princes Highway. The freeway is signed M1 and former bypassed sections of Princes Highway are generally signed as National Route Alt. 1 or C101. The western section linking Geelong and Melbourne is an important commuter and freight route between the two cities. Princes Freeway east links Melbourne with East Gippsland. M1 is one of the busiest sections of rural highway in Victoria, used by large numbers of freight and commercial vehicles and provides access to tourist attractions in central and east Gippsland. It supports Victoria's rural industries and tourism. Towns linked by M1 (almost all bypassed) includes: See List of Melbourne freeways
