Geography Portland is located at 40°55'14" North, 75°5'52" West (40.920622, -75.097738). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²). 1.3 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 8.93% water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 579 people, 236 households, and 152 families residing in the borough. The population density is 429.9/km² (1,117.7/mi²). There are 247 housing units at an average density of 183.4/km² (476.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 98.27% White, 0.00% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.86% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. 4.15% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 236 households out of which 28.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.7% are married couples living together, 9.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% are non-families. 27.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 2.99. In the borough the population is spread out with 22.8% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 32.1% from 25 to 44, 24.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 98.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.6 males. The median income for a household in the borough is $36,827, and the median income for a family is $46,250. Males have a median income of $35,417 versus $21,875 for females.
