Portage Lake Canal

The Portage Lake Canal is a small canal on the Keweenaw Peninsula in Michigan connecting two separate parts of Lake Superior. It is an extension of Portage Lake, built to allow for easier travel from towns along Portage Lake to Lake Superior. Towns situated upon the Portage Lake Canal include Houghton, Hancock, and Ripley. It was originally built for easier shipping of Copper from local mines, which were very productive until the late 1960s.
