Port Neches, Texas

Port Neches is a city located in Jefferson County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 13,601.

History

Port Neches was the site of Fort Grigsby, a set of American Civil War-era defenses intended to stop a Union advance up the Neches River. The fort was constructed in October 1862, and abandoned someftime after July 1863.

Geography

Port Neches is located on the Neches River in southeast Texas. The city is approximately five miles upstream from Sabine Lake, and 20 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico. Port Neches is located at 29°58'51" North, 93°57'37" West (29.980863, -93.960382). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 23.8 km² (9.2 mi²). 23.6 km² (9.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.76% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 13,601 people, 5,280 households, and 3,975 families residing in the city. The population density is 575.2/km² (1,490.4/mi²). There are 5,656 housing units at an average density of 239.2/km² (619.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.75% White, 0.93% African American, 0.47% Native American, 1.57% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.18% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. 5.07% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 5,280 households out of which 34.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.6% are married couples living together, 10.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.7% are non-families. 21.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 3.00. In the city the population is spread out with 25.5% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 96.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.9 males. The median income for a household in the city is $47,523, and the median income for a family is $53,729. Males have a median income of $43,089 versus $27,847 for females. The per capita income for the city is $22,273. 5.6% of the population and 4.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.7% of those under the age of 18 and 4.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
