Polk City is a town located in Polk County, Florida. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,516. The fictional Orlampa, Florida is in Polk City.

Geography

Polk City is located at 28°10'48" North, 81°49'35" West (28.180052, -81.826318). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.0 km² (0.8 mi²). 2.0 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 1,516 people, 542 households, and 422 families residing in the town. The population density is 760.2/km² (1,966.2/mi²). There are 596 housing units at an average density of 298.9/km² (773.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 94.13% White, 1.91% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.40% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.78% from other races, and 1.45% from two or more races. 8.11% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 542 households out of which 39.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.4% are married couples living together, 14.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.0% are non-families. 17.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.80 and the average family size is 3.07. In the town the population is spread out with 29.8% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 32.4% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64, and 10.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 97.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.6 males. The median income for a household in the town is $32,083, and the median income for a family is $36,705. Males have a median income of $28,158 versus $20,579 for females. The per capita income for the town is $14,108. 13.4% of the population and 13.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.2% of those under the age of 18 and 5.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
