Plymouth, North Carolina

Plymouth is a town located in Washington County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,107. It is the county seat of Washington County.

Geography

Plymouth is located at 35°51'35" North, 76°44'52" West (35.859729, -76.747770). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 10.0 km² (3.9 mi²). 10.0 km² (3.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.26% is water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 4,107 people, 1,623 households, and 1,119 families residing in the town. The population density is 409.7/km² (1,061.7/mi²). There are 1,829 housing units at an average density of 182.5/km² (472.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 35.04% White, 63.09% African American, 0.02% Native American, 0.61% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.73% from other races, and 0.51% from two or more races. 1.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,623 households out of which 33.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.1% are married couples living together, 27.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.0% are non-families. 28.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 2.99. In the town the population is spread out with 28.6% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 23.0% from 25 to 44, 23.1% from 45 to 64, and 17.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 77.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 71.0 males. The median income for a household in the town is $17,281, and the median income for a family is $26,800. Males have a median income of $26,352 versus $17,350 for females. The per capita income for the town is $12,067. 37.5% of the population and 30.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 54.3% of those under the age of 18 and 28.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
