Plainfield is a town located in Otsego County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 986.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 76.3 km² (29.5 mi²). 76.3 km² (29.5 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census ² of 2000, there are 986 people, 355 households, and 266 families residing in the town. The population density is 12.9/km² (33.5/mi²). There are 406 housing units at an average density of 5.3/km² (13.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.48% White, 0.41% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. 0.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 355 households out of which 42.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.8% are married couples living together, 8.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.8% are non-families. 20.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.78 and the average family size is 3.14. In the town the population is spread out with 31.3% under the age of 18, 5.0% from 18 to 24, 31.6% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 10.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 102.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 102.7 males. The median income for a household in the town is $34,500, and the median income for a family is $36,667. Males have a median income of $28,188 versus $21,181 for females.
