Pinehurst, North CarolinaPinehurst, home of the 2005 Men's US Open (golf) tournament, is a village located in Moore County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 9,706. Geography Pinehurst is located at 35°11'46" North, 79°27'51" West (35.196053, -79.464109). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 38.6 km² (14.9 mi²). 37.1 km² (14.3 mi²) of it is land and 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.89% water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 9,706 people, 4,510 households, and 3,310 families residing in the village. The population density is 261.3/km² (676.9/mi²). There are 5,668 housing units at an average density of 152.6/km² (395.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 95.31% White, 3.27% African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.62% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 0.28% from two or more races. 1.04% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 4,510 households out of which 13.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.5% are married couples living together, 3.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.6% are non-families. 24.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.05 and the average family size is 2.38. In the village the population is spread out with 11.7% under the age of 18, 2.1% from 18 to 24, 16.7% from 25 to 44, 27.3% from 45 to 64, and 42.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 60 years. For every 100 females there are 86.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.2 males. The median income for a household in the village is $58,950, and the median income for a family is $67,353. Males have a median income of $51,958 versus $32,181 for females. The per capita income for the village is $41,992. 2.8% of the population and 1.3% of families are below the poverty line.
