Pierre Werner

Pierre Werner (December 29, 1913 - June 24, 2002) was a Luxembourgian politician. He was born in Saint Andr near Lille in France, by Luxembourgian parents. He was Prime Minister of Luxembourg from 1959 to 1974 and from 1979 to 1984. In the 1960s he worked on the fundaments of the European Economic Community. He proposed a plan in 1970, the so-called Werner-plan, for a European monetary union. Nearly twenty years later, the Delors-plan, introducing the Euro, was modelled after the Werner-plan. Werner died on June 24, 2002, in Luxembourg.
