Pickens, MississippiPickens is a town located in Holmes County, Mississippi. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,325. Geography Pickens is located at 32°53'12" North, 89°58'12" West (32.886672, -89.970092). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.4 km² (1.3 mi²). 3.2 km² (1.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.62% water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 1,325 people, 452 households, and 333 families residing in the town. The population density is 409.3/km² (1,062.3/mi²). There are 496 housing units at an average density of 153.2/km² (397.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 11.92% White, 87.70% African American, 0.08% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 0.23% from two or more races. 1.28% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 452 households out of which 34.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.7% are married couples living together, 33.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.3% are non-families. 24.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.93 and the average family size is 3.52. In the town the population is spread out with 30.9% under the age of 18, 11.2% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 89.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.5 males. The median income for a household in the town is $17,330, and the median income for a family is $20,956. Males have a median income of $23,750 versus $17,574 for females.
