Pewabic Pottery

Pewabic Pottery is a pottery studio located in Detroit, Michigan. The name is derived from the Chippewa word for the color of metal. It refers to the unusual glaze used at the pottery. The pottery is especially noted for its tiles which grace many regional buildings. The studio was founded by Mary Chase Perry Stratton, an artist famed for her iridescent glaze in 1903 and continues to operate in a 1907 Tudor Revival building built especially for it. It is listed as a National Historic Landmark. The original mission of Mary Chase Perry Stratton and Pewabic Pottery was to create handcrafted objects of lasting beauty, and the pottery is an excellent example of the Arts and Crafts Movement in practice. Pewabic Pottery now operates as a non-profit educational institution. They offer classes in ceramics, hold exhibitions, sell pottery made in house and offer design and fabrication services.
