Peter

Peter is a popular male name.

Meaning

Peter comes from the Latin word petrus, meaning rock. According to the Bible, Jesus called Simon, one of his disciples, by the nickname Kepha, which meant rock in Aramaic — the language spoken in the Holy Land by the 1st Century. The word was later translated into Greek as Lythos and into Latin as Petrus, eventually leading to the English form Peter. This new name is explained by the statement of Jesus Christ that Petrus, because of his expression of faith is "the rock on which I will build my church".
