Pershing County, Nevada

Pershing County is a county located in the state of Nevada. As of 2000, the population is 6,693. Its county seat is Lovelock6. The county is named for General John J. Pershing.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 15,715 km² (6,068 mi²). 15,635 km² (6,037 mi²) of it is land and 80 km² (31 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.51% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,693 people, 1,962 households, and 1,383 families residing in the county. The population density is 0/km² (1/mi²). There are 2,389 housing units at an average density of 0/km² (0/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 77.69% White, 5.35% Black or African American, 3.42% Native American, 0.63% Asian, 0.22% Pacific Islander, 9.38% from other races, and 3.30% from two or more races. 19.33% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,962 households out of which 38.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.20% are married couples living together, 7.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.50% are non-families. 24.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.69 and the average family size is 3.22. In the county the population is spread out with 25.70% under the age of 18, 8.50% from 18 to 24, 36.00% from 25 to 44, 22.10% from 45 to 64, and 7.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 158.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 182.10 males. The median income for a household in the county is $40,670, and the median income for a family is $46,268. Males have a median income of $34,417 versus $24,301 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,589. 11.40% of the population and 10.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.20% of those under the age of 18 and 5.60% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
