Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,634 km² (631 mi²). 1,605 km² (620 mi²) of it is land and 29 km² (11 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.80% water. Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 183,433 people, 72,733 households, and 47,130 families residing in the county. The population density is 114/km² (296/mi²). There are 78,204 housing units at an average density of 49/km² (126/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 79.38% White, 16.10% Black or African American, 0.22% Native American, 1.66% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.95% from other races, and 1.67% from two or more races. 2.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 72,733 households out of which 29.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.60% are married couples living together, 12.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.20% are non-families. 29.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 3.01. In the county the population is spread out with 25.10% under the age of 18, 10.40% from 18 to 24, 27.60% from 25 to 44, 22.80% from 45 to 64, and 14.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 92.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.60 males. The median income for a household in the county is $39,978, and the median income for a family is $50,592. Males have a median income of $40,840 versus $25,335 for females. The per capita income for the county is $21,219. 13.70% of the population and 10.00% of families are below the poverty line.
