Pembroke is a town located in Washington County, Maine. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 879.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 91.2 km² (35.2 mi²). 71.0 km² (27.4 mi²) of it is land and 20.2 km² (7.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 22.17% water.

Demographics

As of the census ² of 2000, there are 879 people, 376 households, and 263 families residing in the town. The population density is 12.4/km² (32.1/mi²). There are 539 housing units at an average density of 7.6/km² (19.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.93% White, 0.11% African American, 0.91% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.59% from two or more races. 0.46% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 376 households out of which 27.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.4% are married couples living together, 8.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.8% are non-families. 26.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 2.75. In the town the population is spread out with 22.6% under the age of 18, 4.9% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 26.3% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 89.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.4 males. The median income for a household in the town is $23,365, and the median income for a family is $27,875. Males have a median income of $35,972 versus $21,544 for females.
