Pavel Axelrod

Pavel Borissovich Axelrod (1850-1928). Raised in Chernigov, a small provincial town in Russia, the son of a poor Jewish innkeeper. Axelrod discovered his quest for knowledge to be inseparable from his view of human progress. A disciple of Mikhail Bakunin, he remained an Idealist even after adopting the Marxist conception of historical materialism. He was one of the founders of the Russian Social Democratic Party with his lifelong friend Georgi Plekhanov, and later joined him with the Mensheviks against Lenin and the Bolsheviks.
