Pat O'brien (Politician)

Patrick Wayne O'Brien (born January 13, 1948) is the Liberal member of Parliament for London Fanshawe in London, Ontario. O'Brien graduated with an honours BA in history from the University of Western Ontario in 1971, and earned his Masters of Education from UWO in 1981. From 1982 to 1993 he served as a high school history teacher and was a member of London City Council. He was elected to Parliament in the 1993 election, and was re-elected in 1997, 2000, and 2004. From 2000 to 2003 he was Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for International Trade, and he is currently chair of the Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs. O'Brien is one of the fiercest opponents of Same-Sex Marriage in the Liberal Caucus along with Tom Wappel. He has frequently chastised Prime Minister Paul Martin for not allowing a free vote among his Cabinet on Bill C-38, which is the act to legalize Same-Sex Marriage in Canada.
