''Note: The MII video tape format is not to be confused with Panasonic's M2 videogame console'' MII (pronounced "em two", since the II is a roman numeral) is a professional video tape format developed in 1986 by Panasonic to compete with Sony's Betacam SP format. It was an improvement on the earlier M format, which was similar to regular Betacam, but based on VHS. The M stands for the way the tape is routed through the VCR. MII is technically similar to Betacam SP, featuring component video recording, but had a few advantages, such as smaller physical tape sizes. It never was nearly as successful as Betacam SP however, and spare parts as well as tapes are now hard to come by.
