Oxford, Ohio

Oxford is a city located in southwestern Ohio in northwestern Butler County in Oxford Township. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 21,943. It is the home of Miami University.

Geography

Oxford is located at 39°30'27" North, 84°44'48" West (39.507452, -84.746552). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 15.2 km² (5.9 mi²). 15.2 km² (5.9 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 21,943 people, 5,870 households, and 2,066 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,440.9/km² (3,734.4/mi²). There are 6,134 housing units at an average density of 402.8/km² (1,043.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 91.20% White, 4.32% African American, 0.17% Native American, 2.42% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.48% from other races, and 1.39% from two or more races. 1.44% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 5,870 households out of which 16.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 26.8% are married couples living together, 6.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 64.8% are non-families. 32.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 2.85. In the city the population is spread out with 8.3% under the age of 18, 66.8% from 18 to 24, 11.7% from 25 to 44, 8.4% from 45 to 64, and 4.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 21 years. For every 100 females there are 87.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.1 males. The median income for a household in the city is $25,164, and the median income for a family is $52,589. Males have a median income of $35,833 versus $24,637 for females. The per capita income for the city is $12,165. 43.7% of the population and 13.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.8% of those under the age of 18 and 8.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
