Oude Ijssel

Oude IJssel (the Dutch name) or Issel (the German name) is an approx. 80 km long river in Germany and the Netherlands. It is a tributary of the river IJssel. The Oude IJssel was the upper course of the IJssel (Oude IJssel means Old IJssel in Dutch) until the connection with the Rhine was dug, possibly in the Roman era. The source of the Issel is near Borken in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. First it flows south-west until it nearly reaches the Rhine near Wesel, then it turns north-west. After Isselburg it crosses the border with the Netherlands (province Gelderland). It flows through Doetinchem and joins the IJssel in Doesburg.
