Otoko Wa Tsurai Yo

Otoko wa tsurai yo (男はつらいよ, "It's tough being a man") is a Japanese film series starring Kiyoshi Atsumi as "Tora-san", a kind-hearted vagabond who is always unlucky in love. All the films with the exception of episodes 3 and 4 were directed by Yoji Yamada, who also wrote all the screenplays. All the Tora-san movies had the same basic plot: Tora-san, a traveling salesman by profession, arrives in some remote town, planning to con the locals out of their money. He meets a local woman and falls in love. But finding himself on the brink of marriage he abandons her and his schemes to flee back to his family's home in Shibamata, Katsushika Ward, Tokyo. Each film had a different leading lady, called the "Madonna", and took place in a different part of Japan. (There were also episodes set in Arizona and Vienna.) Spanning 48 installments from 1969 to 1995, it is recognized by the Guiness Book of World Records as the longest movie series (in number of installments) in the world.
