Ossining (Village), New YorkOssining is a village located in Westchester County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 24,010. As a village, it is located in the Town of Ossining. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 16.4 km² (6.3 mi²). 8.3 km² (3.2 mi²) of it is land and 8.1 km² (3.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 49.37% water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 24,010 people, 8,227 households, and 5,339 families residing in the village. The population density is 2,879.0/km² (7,464.8/mi²). There are 8,515 housing units at an average density of 1,021.0/km² (2,647.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 60.47% White, 20.23% Black or African American, 0.48% Native American, 4.18% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 10.44% from other races, and 4.18% from two or more races. 27.71% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 8,227 households out of which 30.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.0% are married couples living together, 12.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.1% are non-families. 28.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.17. In the village the population is spread out with 20.7% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 39.1% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 11.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 117.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 119.4 males. The median income for a household in the village is $52,185, and the median income for a family is $60,179. Males have a median income of $40,412 versus $36,975 for females. The per capita income for the village is $25,036. 10.6% of the population and 7.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.9% of those under the age of 18 and 8.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
