OpensolarisOpenSolaris is a project created by Sun Microsystems to create an open source version of their proprietary Solaris operating system, a commercial UNIX. The best comparison would be how Sun sells StarOffice while also sponsoring the OpenOffice.org open source community. The "opening" of Solaris 10 will be an incremental process. The first portion of the Solaris 10 codebase to be open sourced was the Dynamic Tracing Toolkit (Commonly known as DTrace), a tracing tool for administrators and developers that aids in tuning a system for optimum performance and utilisation. The actual launch in which a bulk of the Solaris 10 codebase will be released will occur in the second quarter of 2005. Leadership of the OpenSolaris project will be from the CAB (Community Advisory Board). The CAB is "composed of 5 members (2 appointed by Sun, 2 elected by the pilot community and 1 selected by Sun from the broader open source community)". The Community Advisory Board members are: - Rich Teer, external seat.
- Al Hopper, external seat.
- Casper Dik, internal seat.
- Simon Phipps, internal seat.
- Roy Fielding, community seat.
License Sun has said it will release most of the Solaris source code under the new Common Development and Distribution License (CDDL), which is based on the Mozilla Public License (MPL) version 1.1. Like the MPL, the CDDL is not compatible with the popular GNU General Public License. The CDDL was approved as an open source license by the Open Source Initiative in mid January 2005. External links
